How to make dog agility obstacles

At the request of Turkish junior agility handler, Zeynep Irmak Alpaslan, I took photos of some of my home-made regulation agility obstacles and am posting them here.

Notes to FCI competitors:

These obstacles are for competition in the USA (AKC & USDAA). They are usually the same as FCI measurements. But you should always look at the measurement diagrams in the FCI regulations before you start.

Notes to my Turkish friends:

In America, there is one type of PVC, and it is white. It is at any hardware store (like Bauhaus). Normal people can cut and glue it with PVC cement.

White PVC in Turkey is different. It must be heat-welded by a professional plumber. They have special equipment for this.

To build these jumps, you should use the black Turkish PVC and PVC cement from a store like Bauhaus. Black PVC in Turkey is the same as white PVC in America.

Safe Tire Jump:

Frame: Cut and glue pieces to make PVC frame that is 120-150 cm wide and 180 cm tall (taller than mine). You will need:

  • 8 meters of 2.5 cm or 4 cm PVC
  • PVC glue
  • Two 90 degree “elbows” to use at top
  • Two 4-way fittings, or four T-fittings (to use at bottom)
  • Four caps for legs

Tire: Buy 10 cm thick styrofoam (or glue two pieces of 5 cm thick styrofoam). Cut circle 80 cm diameter outside; 50 cm diameter inside. Cut in half.

Cover each tire half with colored duct tape. Tape two small magnets on each side of the bottom. (Do not put magnets on top.) Tape 3 metal pipe straps to sides and top. The top strap connects the two halves at the top. The magnets connect the two halves at the bottom.

Tie to top and sides of the PVC frame.

Bar jump:

Cut and glue pieces to make PVC frame that is 120-150 cm wide and 120 cm tall. Cut the bar to fit on the cups. You will need:

  • 6 meters of 2.5 cm to 3.0 cm PVC
  • PVC glue
  • Two 4-way fittings, or four T-fittings (to use at bottom)
  • 4 caps
  • Colored tape for the bar “stripes”
  • 2 “Clip & Go” jump cups (to hold bar). I will send you some, Zeynep!

Jump wings:

You need two wings for one jump. Don’t glue one leg; this way, you can fold it flat (see photo). For each wing, you will need:

  • 2.3 meters of 2.5 cm to 3.0 cm PVC
  • Three T-fittings
  • Two 90-degree “elbow” fittings
  • Five caps
  • Piece of PVC lattice
  • Screws (I used “lattice screws,” but any screw is okay)

Weave poles with metal base:

You can make the poles. But you must pay somebody to make the metal base. I think the metal base would cost about 100 or 200 YTL to make.

  • 12 meters of 3 cm – 5 cm PVC
  • 12 PVC caps
  • Colored tape for stripes
  • Metal base. You need 4 pieces like the one in the photo.

“Push-in-grass” weave poles:

These are not for competition–only for practice. The photo with red tape shows everything you need to make 6 poles (except the PVC pipe). But you should make 12 poles:

  • 12 meters of 3 cm – 5 cm PVC pipe
  • Colored tape for stripes
  • 12 long bolts
  • 12 washers
  • 12 nuts
  • 24 PVC caps

Drill a hole in each cap. Put a long bolt through the hole. Put a washer and nut on the other side. Put the other caps on top of the poles. Add tape for “stripes.”

Capture

Good luck!
